今回は彼にはいかなる希望もなかった。
まででした。
その後にまず 「：」 （コロン / colon） が来ています。
There was no hope for him this time:
コロンは、説明を加えたりする場合に使います。
意味は 「すなわち、つまり、というのも」 という感じでしょうか。
There was no hope for him this time:
今度は彼に望みがなかった。すなわち ...。
では、その「説明」箇所はどうなっているかというと、
There was no hope for him this time: it was the third stroke.
ちょっとずつ見てみましょう。
_ it was ...
それは...だった
_ it was the third ...
それは三番目の...だった
_ it was the third stroke.
それは三番目の発作だった
＊ stroke は 「（病気の）発作」。
全体では、
There was no hope for him this time: it was the third stroke.
今度ばかりは彼に望みは残っていなかった。 すでに三度目の発作だったのだ。
