James Joyce の "Dubliners"、3回目。


コロンの続きを見てみましょう。 （太字の箇所）

    There was no hope for him this time: it was the third stroke. Night after night I had passed the house (it was vacation time) and studied the lighted square of window: and night after night I had found it lighted in the same way, faintly and evenly.


コロンの後は and で始まっています。

and については前回 and studied the lighted square ... の箇所でも触れたように、

   ・ and は基本的に何かと何かを並べます。

   ・ 並べられる何かと何かは （文法上・構文上） 対等な立場になります。

ということでした。


ここでも 「何」 と 「何」 を “対等” に並べているかがポイントになりそうです。

続きを見てみると

    and night after night

と、前の文と同じ表現が出てきました。 「そして毎晩毎晩」 です。

    and night after night I had found ...

前の文はここは

   Night after night I had passed ...

となっていたので、パターンが同じです。

そうすると、and night after night の and は、前後に同じパターンの文を並べていると予想が着きます。


図式化すると、

    Night after night I had passed the house

                           [and] studied the lighted square of window:

    (and)

    night after night I had found it lighted ...


ということになりそうです。


では、2回目の night after night の後の、

    I had found it lighted （アイ ハッド ファウンド イット ライティッド）

です。


had found は前の文と同じく過去完了形で、found は動詞 find の過去分詞。

find の基本の意味は「見つける」ですが、もう一つ「〜が...（な状態）だとわかる・見出す・気付く」というのがあります。


今回の場合、

    I had found it lighted

なので、

    私は I / わかった had found /それが it / 照らされた lighted 状態だ　と

つまり、

  それが照らされていることがわかるのだった。

ということでしょう。


この形をつかめないと

    I had found it lighted

を、

    私はそれを見つけた I had found it / 照らしていた lighted

とか、

    私は見つけた I had found / それは照らしていた it lighted

とかやってしまうかも。


同じパターンの例文を見つけたので見ておきましょう。

    Finally a servant found a bathroom door locked.

    (William Faulkner, "Sanctuary")


発音：

    Finally a servant found

    ファイナリィ ア サーヴァント ファウンド

    a bathroom door locked.

    ア バスルームドア ロックト


意味：

    Finally とうとう / a servant 召使の一人が / found 気づいた / a bathroom door バスルームのドアが / locked ロックされている（鍵がかかっている）のを.


さて話は戻って、

    I had found it lighted

ですが、ここで照らされている 「それ」 ( it ) とは “窓” のことを指しているのでしょうか。

英文中の it は多くの場合具体的な単語（や単語群）の代わりをしています。

もちろんほとんどの場合、 it が代理する単語（単語群）は it より前（左）にあります。

今の場合はどれでしょうか。

    There was no hope for him this time: it was the third stroke. Night after night I had passed the house (it was vacation time) and studied the lighted square of window: and night after night I had found it lighted in the same way, faintly and evenly.


the lighted square of window の window でしょうか。

この文章をよく読むと、 it  が代理しているのは the lighted square of window という語群のほうのような気がします。どうでしょうか。
